THE FIRST WORD
Welcome to the June edition of Business Network. Ian Harrison, Director of Export at the Department for International Trade – Midlands, was
on record recently as stating that the DIT’s mission is to “continue to demonstrate the export strength within the Midlands Engine”. International Trade has been crucial to the success of countries, communities and
businesses for centuries. As technology and the ability to travel has evolved, International Trade has grown in prominence. It’s an area that can lead to a virtuous circle – it can lead to additional employment,
company growth, a greater variety of goods and services to consumers and, ultimately, can help our businesses – and the communities they serve – to thrive. The East Midlands is renowned for making more things than anywhere else in the UK. We’re
good at exporting these things, but the potential for further growth is huge – yet clearly, there are obstacles to overcome if we’re to fully realise that potential. International Trade is the theme of this month’s edition of Business Network. June’s
publication includes an interview with Karen Smart, Managing Director of East Midlands Airport and she speaks passionately about the potential for the region in this regards, and how East Midlands Airport is playing its part in an ambitious long term vision. There is also a focus feature written by Rachel Morley, General Manager at award-winning
Spatial Global, one of the UK’s foremost independent international freight forwarding, mail and ecommerce delivery specialists. In her piece, Rachel identifies the opportunities for businesses looking to trade
internationally and, crucially, what support is out there to help take your products, services and brand global. There is, of course, also the usual mix of stories and features from Chamber members that
span across a wide range of sectors, topics and issues. Business Network is a dedicated publication for you, our members. If you have a story, or
an idea, that you believe would be suitable for Business Network, please email
magazine@emc-dnl.co.uk or call me on 0333 320 0333 ext. 2089.
Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
