Improving your physical and

mental health in the workplace

Danny Graham (pictured), Duty Manager and fitness instructor at Sunday Times award-winning Nottinghamshire YMCA gym –a charity which places emphasis on celebrating healthy living, youth development and social responsibility – looks at how to achieve a healthy body and mind in the workplace.

When we think about improving ‘healthy living’, eating oranges, guzzling water and hitting the gym might be some of the things that spring to mind. While these are benchmark tactics to promoting good physical health, nurturing your mental and spiritual growth is just as important for maintaining a rounded sense of wellbeing in and out of the workplace. Health and fitness, mindfulness and physical

exercise go hand-in-hand with promoting positive mental health and with happier staff supported by access to various wellbeing initiatives comes better employee engagement and work-life balance. We first must acknowledge that every workplace is

different. Whether you work in an office, a physical job where you are on your feet all day or support vulnerable individuals or children in the community – the quality of your mental and physical wellbeing is paramount. There are a number of great ways to help you and your staff improve their physical and mental health.

WEIGHT VS WELLBEING? Healthy living is all about caring for your own body and nurturing your mind and spirit through positive thinking and achievable targets tailored to your individual goals. It is important to combat the belief that boosting your fitness correlates only with the notion of losing weight. Improving your physical health is a much richer and

Nurturing your mental health is just as important as improving your physical health

more complex process than simply aiming to drop a few pounds. Leading a healthy lifestyle which holistically improves every area of your daily activities – such as eating a balanced diet and enjoying regular exercise – can make all the difference to your sense of wellbeing.
