Greece is well situated for easy access to south east Europe, the Middle East and countries around the Black Sea but its ongoing debt crisis continues to affect growth in the Greek economy. That said, there are many UK companies that continue to be active in
Greece including Vodafone, Dixons, Marks & Spencer, Unilever and GlaxoSmithKline. Additionally, a major public sector privatisation programme and restructuring is currently underway, with UK consultants, law firms and auditors already involved in the first phase of privatisations, which will inevitably create opportunities for East Midlands businesses to get involved. The country’s sovereign debt crisis, which started in early 2010,
resulted in Greece being cut off from financial markets and as a condition of the bailout packages that followed, implemented an economic adjustment programme. Despite a decline in UK exports over the past four years as a result of the debt crisis, Greece still remains an important market for British goods and services, which are well received provided prices are competitive. In 2015 UK exports to Greece were worth £2.2bn (£0.9bn goods and £1.3bn services) and included road vehicles, pharmaceutical products and clothing.
