Ornamental grasses are still in absolute vogue, beauti- ful in landscapes and dotted around the garden, in large pots or planted in the ground, also stunning as a backdrop for colorful flowers. Fa- vorites

Gamma, Bouteloua gracillis, deep rooted and drought toler- ant Blue Gamma grass is also known as ‘eye brow grass’ be- cause of the shape of its seed heads. Growing when Mast- odons and flying mammals roamed prehistoric times this amazing grass is nutritious in all stages of growth. Quite el- egant blowing in the wind it is a must have for meadows and architectural plantings. Autumn Moor Grass, Sesleria autumnalis, is native to south- ern Europe and the Caucasus region but here it has never naturalized or set seed. Lovely Autumn Moor Grass looks good year round, rich, soft, yel- low-green foliage topped with slender white flowers in spring maturing into tall golden-tan seed heads in autumn. Mulch in summer and fall to retain sufficient moisture.

Copper Shouldered Oval Sedge, Carex bricknellii also known as Bricknell’s sedge grows in full to partial sun. Unique copper colored seed heads appear from flowers in early summer rising up to a magnificent three feet tall. Native to North America and found in dry prairies, savannas and open woodlands, relished by sparrows and gamebirds. Great for waterwise plantings, Restoration Projects, Wildlife Gardens and mass plantings. An absolute favorite of mine

is Wire Grass, Juncus pat- ens, impossible to overwater
