I believe you need to let the pony or horse speak for itself. Turn it out immaculately – the rider needs to be turned out beautifully too, but for me conservative is better.

Learn your individual show. You will then feel confident about performing in public.

Play around with the size of your horses plaits to get the best from the shape of your horse’s neck.

I still have jackets I have had since I was 14 so invest in a jacket that will last a long time and go the distance.

Get your horse used to a ride judge by asking a trusted friend to get on board so that your horse will be confident with another rider at shows.

T ell us about your terrible setbacks through injury.

I broke my neck 9 years ago and again in 2017. This leſt me bed bound for many weeks and I didn’t see a horse for 6 weeks! The joy of coming back to the yard and being back with those familiar friends, both 4 legged and my wonderful team who kept things running was amazing. Hard work and dedication take you to where you are, and one of my greatest pleasures now is training my staff and team and also my pupils as well as the horses. I am a lot more picky about what I ride now, but horses are in my genes and I have been so incredibly fortunate in my life.

One person who Katie named as her inspiration is Ruth McMullen. Katie has been training with Ruth since she was 17. She credits Ruth with making her an all round person, and is still very much in touch with her to this day.

Aſter a lovely chat, Katie signs, off and no doubt dashes back into the yard.
