Superb New Facilities at The Sunshine Tour
70x120m sand arena, the show jumpers have never had it so good! The extra space means the Sunshine Tour have included a special championship for novice adult riders qualifying from 60cm to 75cm. Over the first two days of the championships, senior riders (17 years old & over) can take part in open and championship classes, without the pressure of the busy weekend atmosphere. Sue Brewer, dare we say at 49 years-young is a Sunshine Tour veteran, she has been to the championships for several years and loves it. She has qualified for the 60cm and 65cm championships with Promise, her 16.1hh, 18-year-old Hanoverian cross. “I love going to the Sunshine Tour, the atmosphere is amazing, everyone is so friendly and supportive and this year there are smaller jumping classes for adults being held on a surface. I don’t know anywhere else that you can compete on such a huge scale but as a novice.” It’s not only the show jumpers who benefit from Hickstead’s impressive upgrade. This year the Eventer’s Challenge championships, for qualified riders on Sunday 15th September, will be held in the luxurious 50x80m all-weather arena, complete with banks and dips, leading into Hickstead’s new Eventer’s Complex. Developed behind Ring 4, this boasts an impressive lake with surrounding surfaced entry and purpose-built cross- country fences. On Thursday 12th the Sunshine Tour is introducing all-new Arena Eventing and One Day Event classes, which are open to all! Commencing with clear round, followed by open classes from 60cm-90cm over show jumping and cross-country style fences, the day concludes with a quirky ‘fun class’ called Gambler’s Stakes. One Day Event classes, on Thursday and Sunday include a dressage phase and compact show jumping and cross-country combined. These additions really highlight the inclusive nature of the championships for riders from all disciplines, welcoming not only those who have qualified, but further offering non-qualified combinations a taste of the action.
T
he All England Jumping Course at Hickstead have been busy making extraordinary improvements to their facilities. With the addition of a brand-new
14-year-old twins, Katy and Cara Mannix have both qualified on their ponies Burlington Fisher and Twyford Cascade. Katy, who has owned and ridden her 15hh Irish Sport Horse, Fish, for the last three years has qualified for the 85-90cm Eventer’s Challenge championship. “Although he is only a little horse, he has an amazing jump and loves to go out and compete in arena eventing, show jumping, and working hunter. This is the first time I have qualified for the Sunshine Tour and I’m really looking forward to it, we have never been to Hickstead before.” Cara, who has owned and ridden her 13.2hh Welsh C, Cassie, for the last six years has qualified for the 75- 80cm championship. “She adores all types of jumping. Once you have ridden her jumping across the country you won’t want to ride anything else! When Fish qualified, I really wanted Cassie to go with him as I know Cassie would really enjoy the event.” Cara’s photo courtesy of Spidge Photography, Katy’s photo courtesy of the owner. So, whether you hope to win one of the coveted yellow star pointed, fancy, blingy rosettes, a golden sash and a personalised champions’ rugs, or whether you are just coming along to camp with friends and enjoy the atmosphere, we’re sure you’ll have a great weekend at the Sunshine Tour!
