EVENT IN FOCUS

East Midlands Employability and Skills Summit 2019

Date: 9 July 2019 Time: 8.30am-1.30pm Venue: Loughborough University, West Park Teaching Hub

Price: Members £20+VAT Non-members £75+VAT

Regional prosperity will rest on having access to a skilled, productive workforce, however, as identified through feedback from our Quarterly Economic Survey, it is clear that there is still a continued problem faced by employers in relation to the shortfall of available skilled labour. In reflection of the Chamber’s

goal to “Support development of current and future workforce in the East Midlands” the 2019 Summit will explore, through a range of keynote speeches, panel discussion and workshops, how the region can address this challenge with the aim to develop an environment where there is a bright future for our local economies, communities, young people and those furthest away from the job market.

Context: When we explore the data from our Q4 2018 Quarterly Economic Survey we can see, as has been the case for the past five years’ worth of data, around three-in-ten respondents saw their workforce increase over the three months before the survey. Six-in-ten businesses attempted to recruit in the quarter with a similar amount struggling to fill positions. In particular, there was an increase in businesses finding difficulties recruiting to professional and managerial type roles. We also see an increase in

intended investments in training, with a third of all businesses reporting enhanced intentions. The increase may be driven by necessity in terms of continued shortages of skilled labour and, particularly for those businesses in sectors heavily reliant on EU labour,

an uncertainty around access to future workforce. Through a number of keynote

presentation, panels and workshops the Summit will explore issues and potential solutions and will provide delegates with practical takeaways to support the development of your current and future workforce.

Confirmed keynote: Topic: Envisioning the future of education and jobs trends, data and drawing Speaker: Dr Elnaz T. Kashefpakdel (pictured), Head of Education and Employer’s Research In conjunction

with the Organisation for Economic Co- operation and Development (OECD), this landmark new report looks at how to prepare the leaders of the future for the challenges and opportunities presented by the fourth industrial revolution. It concludes that the skills

mismatch observed in the labour market has its roots in primary school, and that giving all children, regardless of gender and social

background, the same chance to meet professionals in a variety of fields is the key to widening their view of the world of work.

Current confirmed workshops

include: • Work experience for schools, industrial placements, good internships – LLEP

• Work happens in brains, not offices – Smart Working Revolution

• Discover the business case for encouraging and supporting your staff to become school governors – Inspiring Governance; Education and Employers
