CHAMBER NEWS

Construction worker support is built from the ground up

An innovative project has been launched to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of construction workers in Nottingham. The Construction Industry Peer Scheme (CIPS) has a target to support

over 100 sector workers in the next 12 months. Participants will get free access to 24/7 online help from a reputable

digital support service - Big White Wall - for people who are stressed, anxious, low or simply not coping. They will also be given opportunities to take part in

physical activities and discussion groups aimed at helping them to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle and giving them tools to manage their mental health and wellbeing. The service is free to users, confidential

and aims to be flexible to fit in with the needs of those taking part. Groups are delivered by Self Help UK and

Notts County Football in the Community. Both Self Help UK and Notts County

Football in the Community have experience of working with people with physical and mental health issues. They will use their combined experience to engage and motivate participants. Where additional support needs are

identified, referral to external support services will be made and in limited cases the project may be able to fund rapid access to physical therapies to enable participants to stay in work or return to work more quickly. The CIPS project can also support employers

to develop self-help groups in the workplace with practical help to set up groups. A CIPS support toolbox has been developed for employers. A pilot project was sucessfully launched in

February. The next session will begin on 29 April at the YMCA in Aspley, Nottingham. For details of how to take part contact Glenda Casteloes on 07516110215.

Other groups will start in August and

November. For details of how to take part visit bit.ly/EMC_CIPS The project is funded by the Work and

Health Unit – a partnership between the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Health and Social Care – and is led by Nottingham City Council. Chris Hobson (pictured, inset), Director of Policy at the Chamber, said: “There is a certain mindset associated with the construction industry which means people don’t naturally talk about their problems – but that doesn’t mean mental and physical health issues don’t exist. “The Construction Industry Peer Support Scheme will give workers an outlet through which to discuss their problems with other people who are also ‘suffering in silence’. Together they will be able to find solutions and a route to recovery.”

“I've learned a lot about the different ways I can manage stress and improve my wellbeing and I'm starting the process of changing.”

D2 Business Starter supports Claire all the way to shortlist

A D2 Business Starter client, Claire Zwozny-Bestwick, has been shortlisted for three awards at the Mainframe Awards for her business CRzy Best. Mainframe, an initiative that aims

to bring together a community of digital and creative business across Derby and Derbyshire, is part of The Big House, a collaboration providing sector-specific support across the D2N2 area. Claire, a client on the D2

Business Starter programme, has been nominated in the Best Digital/Creative Start Up, Best Digital/Creative Innovation and New Product to Market categories. The Chamber-delivered D2

Business Starter programme is an

initiative which gives all Derbyshire residents the opportunity to explore their business potential and learn how to set up a new business with a series of flexible, fully- funded workshops and one-to-one support. This support is delivered by experienced professionals working with small groups at local venues across the county. The programme offers an intense

and focused approach to stimulating enterprise creation, reducing the barriers and inequalities faced by deprived communities across Derby city centre and the county of Derbyshire - and all for free. Paul Stuart (pictured), Head of Enterprise at the Chamber, said:

“Congratulations to Claire on her hat trick of nominations, which is in itself a fantastic achievement. “While the success of her

business is ultimately down to her ability and hard work, it nevertheless demonstrates the value and importance of programmes such as the D2 Business Starter initiative in helping fledgling businesses and budding entrepreneurs to reach their potential and, ultimately, be successful.” The Mainframe Awards take place later this month.
