THE FIRST WORD
Welcome to the April edition of Business Network. Whatever a business’s scope, area of activity or short, mid, long-term goals – skills is never
far away from the top of the agenda. The notion of skills – how we empower current and future workforces, address skills gaps
and create a strategic link between academia and the world of business – is frequently discussed in this publication and is prominent in the wider conversation – locally, regionally and nationally. Add to the mix the so-called fourth industrial revolution and the fact that many of the jobs
of the future don’t even exist yet and you get a firm idea as to why the Chamber places such importance on skills. It is this subject that forms the main theme of this month’s edition of Business Network. This edition features a thought-provoking focus feature from former Chamber President
and current Chair of the East Midlands HS2 Skills and Supply Chain Board, Ian Greenaway. In his piece, Ian discusses the current and future skills needs of East Midlands businesses
and, crucially, how we can ensure these needs are met. April’s edition also includes an interview with Louise Curd, Director of Programmes at Chamber member Learn by Design. Louise has worked within education for over 26 years, 15 of which have been spent within leadership and management roles, and so is perfectly placed to talk on this subject. Learn by Design is also set to work with the Chamber to deliver primary school engagement in Derby and this is discussed in the interview. As ever, this edition is full of success stories and wins from you, our members, as well as a multitude of other news – including reaction from the recent successful Enterprising Women Awards – and a range of features by members relating to both Legal Services and Green Business. If you have a story, or an idea, that you believe would be suitable for Business Network, please email
magazine@emc-dnl.co.uk or call me on 0333 320 0333 ext. 2089.
Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
