INTERVIEW

‘We work in every corner of the UK and that has been really exciting – to be able to take what I have done in the city and develop it nationally’

Louise’s passion for education has helped her play to her strengths as Director of Programmes at Learn by Design

a huge amount on resilience and motivation. It’s all about real core skills being developed for businesses for their employees of the future. “Everything we do is about engaging young people and

helping them move forward and enhancing their skills so they can thrive in society.” While the overarching mission is a positive one, Louise

understand that there is much work ‘on the ground’ that needs to go into ensuring such ambitions are met and that there are a variety of factors which need addressing to ensure students can look to a successful future – with business consequently reaping the rewards. “A big thing for us is breaking down barriers of

stereotypes and getting young women to see that science and technology careers, for example, can absolutely be for them. Also working with young people to help them understand the link between success and hard work in their studies and what they can achieve in the future.

“I was at the national Big Bang Fair recently – which is a

key focus for us - and part of that embodies the Big Bang Science and Engineering competitions. It was inspiring to see the significant number of young people that won categories from the Midlands from a whole range of backgrounds, which represented a really good gender balance with some fantastic female winners. “I think the gender balance is changing and shifting and

young women are starting to see that there are a whole range of careers that may not have been first choice a number of years ago and now they realise they have the skills for these careers and can pursue them. “Equally, there are careers that young men have

traditionally been cautious about stepping into but again, they can absolutely excel in them - so we try to open all young peoples’ eyes to the possibilities out there.” On the subject of empowering females in

business, Learn by Design was a recent finalist at business network April 2019 51
