NEW STAFF Mr Rees Peripatetic Music Teacher

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA YEAR 10 & 11 TRIP

T

his term, both Year 10 and 11 music students were taken to the creative home of the London Symphony Orchestra to work with top practitioners in music technology. They got the chance to expand

their knowledge of composition and digital music, working alongside musicians from one of the world’s top orchestras. The students left inspired and with knowledge they could apply directly to their coursework. Many have returned since to attend free music sessions run by the LSO every week. For more information on these free classes, please contact Mr Sutcliffe.

‘It was an amazing day! It gave us loads of new skills to apply to our GCSE course, which I found really useful’ – Destiny, Year 10

AMY WINEHOUSE FOUNDATION T Ms

his term, students received an assembly from the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The

foundation aims to prevent the misuse of substances in young people. They heard some very powerful stories from people who have turned around their lives after misusing substances. Year 10 students then had the opportunity to receive a one-hour workshop

during a drop-down day where they looked at triggers that lead to the misuse of drugs and the support which can be put in place where people struggle. Destiny Okoro in Year 10 reported, “The workshop taught me the disadvantages of misusing substances.” Sudesh Thalagodage in Year 10 said, “The workshop helped me work, as part a team, to look at the factors that can make someone misuse substances”.

L

ast month the Elite choir took a trip to Folk Music Centre, Cecil Sharp House to attend the Ark Music

event, ‘Sing into Spring’. It was a chance for all Ark choirs to join together and explore a range of exciting repertoire, from Brazilian festival songs to Broadway smash hits. The students were taken through a series of masterclasses with professional singers, learning techniques of ensemble and solo singing. They also got the chance to create their own group composition to perform to an invited audience. The day culminated in a vibrant performance, with a live-bands and over 100 voices singing together in harmony.
