AGFS: GROWTH
From the Drama production of Hairspray, to the Step into Dance programme and Jack Petchey Challenge...
W
e have an afterschool club that runs every Friday by the Step into Dance academy. Our
students have shown dedication towards the club and continue to progress every week. Our aim is to have the students compete in many competitions to build up their confidence when performing in front of an audience. Our street dance crew have already performed a piece of choreography at our Christmas concert last year, and they enjoyed every moment. We have a few members of the street dance crew who have already been scouted by the Royal Academy of Dance and invited to a special dance workshop at their headquarters in Battersea.
INTO DANCE MAKING WORKSHOP AT THE RAD
T
hree talented dancers, Nicoleta Charchaci in Year 8; Lara Georgescu and Gracie Parsons in Year 7,
were selected by our Step into Dance programme to attend a week long choreography workshop at the Royal Academy of Dance in Battersea over February half term. The choreographic project was called Into Dance Making and Nicoleta, Lara and Gracie worked with professional choreographer Zosia Jo to gain an insight into the craft of dance making and explored how creative ideas can become a duet or solo piece.
The students have been invited to perform later this year at London’s Southbank Centre one of the most prestigious creative arts hubs in the world.
SPEAK OUT O n Wednesday 18th December,
our whole Year 10 cohort took part in the ‘Jack Petchey
Speak Out Challenge.’ We undertook this workshop at our very own Ark Greenwich Free School!
We believe that every student should be equipped with the skills, confidence and desire to speak in public; an ability which seems to be underestimated in modern society.
Each student took part in public speaking activities and games. They were then set the challenge of writing and performing a speech on a topic of their choice. They were marked for the content, delivery and structure of their speech. Students learned some valuable skills that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.
Next, students competed in forms and two winners from each tutor group were selected to compete for qualification to the regional finals. We then had to narrow this down to two speakers from a strong field: Rhiannon Contento, Joseph Ernest, Connor Pearce, Annika Bloomquist, Jayden Asare and Vanessa Imo.
All of the students did our school immensely proud. The trainers,
from the Jack Petchey organisation, commented on the fact that Ark Greenwich Free School had the highest quality and most competitive students that they had seen this academic year. This places us in a good position to develop elite performers from our school.
After much deliberation, we were able to confirm our two winners: Annika Bloomquist from 10 Sancho and Jayden Asare from 10 Sancho. These students deserve huge congratulations as they will be representing the school at the Regional finals, which I am delighted to say that Ark Greenwich Free School is hosting on Thursday 4th
April. They
will be competing against 18 other students from different schools within the borough.
The winner of the Regional Final will compete at the Semi-Finals in central London with 15 students progressing to the National Final at the Cambridge Theatre in London. There are prizes up for grabs along the way.
We hope that they can emulate the performance from Alexi Loizou, who represented the school last year at the national finals and finished third.
