DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Expedition Season Full Steam Ahead!

Y

ear 9 and Year 10 Ark Greenwich Free School students are currently working flat out

in preparation for their assessed expeditions which take place on 3rd May (Silver) and 15th (bronze).

and 16th July

All Year 9 students are now taking part in the DofE enrichment, during which students are busy organising their tent groups, walking groups and learning the fundamentals of how to survive a few days and nights out of their comfort zone.

In recent weeks students have begun to familiarise themselves with the walking routes they will be taking, and learnt the importance of understand contour lines on maps to help decide their existing location. Students also began learning how difficult it is to put up a tent!

Working in teams, with the aid of a little competition, students were challenged to get their tent erected, and then tidied away in record time to win a prize for their team.

In the coming weeks students will build on their cooking skills and emergency aid before we hit, a hopefully dry and warm expedition season!

BATEMAN’S CHILDREN’S HOME & WORLD BOOK DAY

hank you to everybody who contributed to the fundraising for World Book Day. As with

last year, the money we raised is going to “Bateman’s”, a children’s home and school in Chennai in Southern India. The Trust cares for around 15 boys in a small flat, and 30 girls, who currently live in a town house which doubles as a school when the girls roll up their sleeping mats in the morning and their dormitories become their classrooms. The children have all suffered severe deprivation. I spent 6 weeks teaching science and English here in 2016, alongside my son, who taught music.

CHENNAI

The 45 children between them had just one small bookcase of old, grimy and dilapidated books, some of which dated back to the 1950s, and many of which had covers or pages missing.

The £216 we raised last World Book Day was spent on sending them new and exciting books, including fiction and dictionaries. As you can see from the photos, the children have been enjoying their new books very much. There will be an opportunity later this year for AGFS students to write to individual children in this school and get a reply. Meanwhile, if you would like to know more about the trust the link is here: https://www. batemans.org.uk I am delighted that AGFS is building links with this school, and I am sure that both our students and theirs will benefit from getting to know about each other.
