(“Bertie”) quoted a piece of poetry:

“And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied:

“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.

And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.”

Those words were the preamble to an obscure poem by Minnie Louise Haskins, “God Knows.” The poem was just one part of her career which had included teaching at the London School of Economics, working in Madras (India) for the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, being a social worker in London’s impoverished East End, and engaging with industrial welfare and schools. In 1912, she wrote a book of poetry to raise funds. She was described as: “A woman of unusual capacity and character… a rare understanding and sympathy and infinite patience combined with a great deal of love and interest in people.”

So if an obscure academic and a socially awkward, introspective man could recite words that inspired free men and rallied a nation in a desperate struggle against tyranny, what excuse do any of us have for hanging it up, giving up, taking offense, blaming others, or thinking it can’t be done? If we are willing, God can clothe us with Himself as He did Gideon and defeat the forces of darkness. He can, He will, and we must!

The riddle faced by Dr. John E. Douglas, Sr. was resolved in triumph. WME has faced many riddles since that first challenge faced by Dr. Douglas, but God has solved every one of them and provided a way through each problem. The riddles we will face in the future, whatever they may be, will be embraced and overcome in the Name of the Lord. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS, BUT WE KNOWWHO HOLDS THE FUTURE. AND THROUGH OUR GOD, WE SHALL DO EXPLOITS AND TRIUMPH IN HIS NAME.
