And Samson said unto them, ‘I will now put forth a riddle unto you…’ And they said unto him, ‘Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.’ And he said unto them, ‘Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweet- ness.’ And they could not in three days expound the riddle.”

— Judges 14:12-14 by John G. Cathcart, WME President

Sixty years ago Dr. John E. Douglas, Sr. was discouraged in his spirit and

wounded in his heart. He also must have felt as disappointed and betrayed by the leader of the ministry team on which he served

as King David felt when Ahithophel turned on him. Dr. Douglas knew that his mentor had succumbed to human weakness and died. Like David and Ahithophel, he and Dr. Dougas had taken sweet counsel together and had ministered in the power and might of the Spirit. Another friend and minister, Rev. R.W. Shambach had gone with them to the Philippines, where they were mightily used of God to establish churches, raise up leaders, build

congregations, and impact the land for the

Lord Jesus Christ. Now how the mighty had fallen!

What do you do when you are confronted with a situation like Dr. John Douglas, Sr. faced? You can retire quietly from the public scene. You can question God with “Why, Why, Why?” You can ask yourself why you weren’t more alert and aware, why you didn’t see it coming, and what you might have done to prevent it.
