Leonard Bernstein’s music and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics transplant Romeo and Juliet to the backstreets of New York, giving us this Broadway musical masterpiece at the Lyric. Tony and Maria are two wide-eyed teenagers from opposing gangs who fall in love. As their friends and family battle with one another, Tony and Maria long for “a place for us…somewhere.” Their songs illuminate every scene and permeate our culture, from the romance of “Maria” and “Tonight” to the exuberance of “America” and the humor of “Gee, Officer Krupke.” Add to that the bold, sexy, iconic dances of Jerome Robbins that smolder and sizzle with energy, and you have a musical-theater experience you’ll never forget. Meet at the Geneva Train Station to catch the 10:30 am train (ticket on your own) into the Ogilvie Center in Chicago. Once there, enjoy lunch on your own. You may wish to try the French Market or Ovie Bar & Grill under the train station or the Florian Bistro in the Lyric Opera House. The show starts at 1:30 pm and runs 3 hours including the intermission. Trip includes show ticket price only.

Start the day with lunch and then prepare to be amazed by the Place de la Musique, the Sanfillipo Mansion. It takes a three- hour tour to see this multi-million dollar estate. The guided tour begins in the 29,000 square foot music room, containing the world’s largest theatre pipe organ. The Sanfilippo family have spent years collecting crystal chandeliers, penny arcade machines, band organs, music boxes, Victrola’s, slot machine wind-up viewers, Tiffany lamps, full-sized steam engines, and train cars. Enjoy the opulence of this magnificent modern palace filled to the brim with memories of yesteryear. Trip includes transportation, lunch, and tour. Be prepared to be on your feet and do a lot of walking.
