Sport The Business of Sport Top honour for Bears PodBlast
A T20 cricket podcast developed by Warwickshire County Cricket Club and BBC WM has been named Innovation of the Year at the England & Wales Cricket Board’s Business of Cricket Awards (BOCA). Hosted by BBC WM’s Richard
Wilford and Bears fast bowler Oliver Hannon-Dalby, the first series of the Bears PodBlast was released during the seven weeks of the Vitality Blast season to give fans the inside story of the Birmingham Bears 2018 campaign. With members of the Bears
squad appearing in the studio, the PodBlast was available to listen on BBC iPlayer and to download on all podcast providers. The podcast also featured
interviews with star names such as batsman Ian Bell, who talked about his England aspirations. “It’s fantastic to see the Bears
PodBlast recognised at such an illustrious awards event in its first season,” said Tom Rawlings, head of media at Warwickshire.
“The concept was initially
discussed in the 2017 season, which was followed by detailed planning meetings with the BBC WM team over the winter and recordings in July and August.
‘The PodBlast has been well supported by our fans’
“It’s been great to see it develop
and huge thanks go to Richard and Olly for creating such a great listen for Bears fans. “The PodBlast has been well
supported by our fans and there’s plenty of discussions taking place about the future and how we can take it forward for the 2019 Vitality Blast.” The ECB BOCAs celebrate
business excellence across the 18 First Class counties and the MCC. The ceremony took place at
Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.

Velo event to return to the roads
The 100-mile Velo cycling event is to return to the region’s roads this year – with a new name and a revised route. Velo Birmingham & Midlands –
formerly Velo Birmingham – is a closed-road cycling extravaganza which is expected to attract 17,000 riders of all abilities. Starting and finishing in Birmingham city centre, the new route will pass through the heart of the 2019 European City of Sport and 2021 Capital of Culture, Coventry. In between these two city centre
adventures, riders will travel through Warwickshire towns and villages such as Coleshill, Hurley and Fillongley, along with Solihull villages Meriden, Bentley Heath, Balsall Common and Knowle. The route has been agreed in
partnership with Birmingham City Council, Coventry City Council, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council, Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council as well as Emergency Services and transport operators to minimise the impact of the necessary road closures.
End-of-season buzz for Wasps
The date has been set for Wasps’ end-of-season awards at the Ricoh Arena, which will be hosted by former England and British and Irish Lions star Martin Bayfield. Businesses and supporters
will have the opportunity to join Wasps players, coaches and directors at the black-tie event on 7 May. Nick Eastwood, CEO of
Wasps, said: “The end-of- season awards are one of the most prestigious events in the Club’s rugby calendar. “Last year we raised a

riders, road closures will be in place at various times during the event day. General entries sold out within a week of opening, but organisers have confirmed that an additional allocation of entries will go on general sale to those on the waiting list. Alternatively, riders can secure
their place on the start line via one of Velo Birmingham & Midlands’ official charities – Queen Elizabeth
Hospital Charity Birmingham, NSPCC, Cure Leukaemia and Alzheimer’s Society. In 2017, Velo Birmingham raised
