Willshee’s steps in to tackle Christmas waste
Burton-based waste and recycling firm Willshee’s stepped in to help local restaurants, pubs and bars to slash waste over the festive period. The Wetmore Road company said that
Christmas always saw a massive rise in waste, 30 per cent above normal levels. To help tackle
this, Willshee’s introduced a new vehicle to sort out waste on the spot. The recycling truck is one of only a handful that can do this. The truck was used to help the firm
recycle more than 10,000 tonnes of material during December, including 200 tonnes of glass and 3,000 tonnes of cardboard. Dean Willshee (pictured), managing
director of Willshee’s, said: “It’s a peak time of year for our business and our fleet of vehicles and experienced team worked non- stop in the run up to Christmas.” Among local businesses who used
Willshee’s to recycle their waste are Branston Golf and Country Club and The Winery restaurant. Branston managing director Ben Laing
said: “As a company we are very conscious to make sure that we are recycling and are proud that 100 per cent of our glass and cardboard is recycled even at peak times.”

Good prospect: The new Aspects venue at the NMA
Events space opening is ‘landmark moment’
A new events building at Staffordshire’s National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) is expected to generate £21.4m across the West Midlands region during the next decade. The new building is Aspects, an £8.1m
structure made up of seven separate event spaces and which can host anything from conferences to banquets. The project has been backed by £500,000 of
funding from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership. Other funding came from The Royal British Legion, and The Veolia Environmental Trust. Sarah Oakden, head of marketing at the NMA,
said: “The opening of Aspects is another landmark moment for the Arboretum, made possible thanks to the generous financial support of our partners. “Aspects blends the latest technology
incorporated in the building with access to the living memorials within the Arboretum’s 150-acre
grounds, providing a unique experience for event attendees. “We currently host hundreds of small and
medium sized events each year for organisations from across the UK, including military, fraternity and business groups. Aspects enables us to build on this legacy of successful delivery, providing a state-of-the-art flexible events space for events that matter in a place that matters.” GBSLEP deputy chairman Chris Loughran,
said: “Developing new conference facilities at the National Memorial Arboretum will help to attract more visitors and generate local spending – while also raising southern Staffordshire’s profile with a much wider audience across the UK.” Aspects has been supported by various local
Staffordshire businesses, including two in Burton, design agency Brand Jam and signage maker Hardy Signs. Together, they produced 32 internal and external signs for the new building.
College student goes for gold
Burton and South Derbyshire College sports student Louis Rowe is celebrating after striking gold – and meeting royalty. Louis’ accolade is a gold Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award, and he recently visited St James’s Palace to receive it from Prince Edward. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme’s
aim is to enable young people, aged between 14 and 24, to develop key skills for life and work. Gold winners go further still, by volunteering
to learn a skill, get fit, take part in a week long residential course, and plan and undertake an expedition in wild country. Louis said: “I first got involved with the Duke
of Edinburgh Award when I was at school. It has been an exciting experience which has given me the chance to learn new skills, be active and help out in the community along the way. I might now go on to take the Duke of Edinburgh Award Diamond Challenge and then become an ambassador for the charity.”
