Charity tackles period poverty in Birmingham
A charity is aiming to raise awareness of an issue that is continuing to blight the lives of some girls and women living in Birmingham. Cysters say ‘period poverty’ is preventing those affected from leading a normal life. The charity is dedicated to improving the
health, educational, human welfare, and opportunities for women affected by reproductive health and gynaecological problems. Cysters is asking for donations of sanitary
items and providing those to those who need them. Founder Neelam Heera said: “It is hard to
imagine that in 2019 that girls and women are missing school, university or work using old clothes or tissues to replicate a disposable sanitary towel. “The lack of accessible and affordable
sanitary products for these females keeps them at a disadvantage in terms of education, preventing their mobility and productivity. Conversely, this problem is not limited to school girls from a low-income background. “This is a massive, global and societal
issue.” Cysters says one in ten girls cannot
afford to buy menstrual products and more than 137,700 children in the UK have missed school because of period poverty. What’s more, 40 per cent of girls in the
UK have used toilet roll because they couldn’t afford menstrual products. Cysters is being backed by Future Faces
president, Mark Hipwell, who said: “There’s a huge emotional and financial impact caused by a basic human need. Local businesses who can help will be able to make a real difference.”

to talk to MPs and members of the House of Lords in London about the work that Future Faces does to help develop the young professionals and future leaders of Greater Birmingham. “Everyone was very complimentary of the
organisation and its outstanding growth so it was great to put this on their radar and highlight how ambitious and talented our members are.” The visit was the third in recent years by
Future Faces to Westminster. The organisation was previously invited to tour the Houses of Commons and Lords, to see first hand how Britain’s law makers go about their role. The also met Ladywood Labour MP Shabana Mahmood, one of the first Muslim women to be
