Cannock station right on track for upgrade
Council leaders in Cannock are hoping that the local railway station can be upgraded and turned into an impressive gateway to the district. To achieve this, Chase Council has joined
forces with other interested parties to fund a business study to examine how the upgrade might be achieved and what such a scheme would involve. The £400,000 cost of this study is being met
by the council, Staffordshire County Council, West Midlands Rail Executive and West Midlands Trains. The study will look at a number of potential
improvement works, including platform extension and widening, creation of a multi-deck car park, information points/café and an improved bus interchange for connections to the McArthurGlen designer outlet. Councillor Gordon Alcott, portfolio leader for
Economic Development and Planning, said: “The station is in need of upgrade to provide a modern and inviting facility for rail passengers.
Cannock Station “Although the proposals are at an early stage
and there is no guarantee of securing funding, the development of the business case is an important first step and will ensure that we are in the best position to bid for funding in the future.” It is anticipated that the completed business case will be completed by September 2019.
Recognition for
council project Cannock Chase Council’s work on the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Cannock project has been named as runner-up at the prestigious Institute of Economic Development (IED) Annual Awards. The council’s economic development
team was shortlisted for the award for its work on helping the £160m shopping and leisure project get off the ground. The development will open in 2020. Gary
Bond, managing director of development at McArthurGlen, said: “This development would not have been possible without the clear leadership and vision of Cannock Chase Council who believed in this project from the very start, and supported the development at every level. “Over the next two years, this 30-acre
site will be transformed into a landmark retail destination, introducing 80 sought- after brands to the West Midlands and creating 1,000 retail jobs for the local community.”
