There are broadly two types of diabetes: • TYPE 1 In Type 1 diabetes, the body stops producing insulin so the patient requires daily administration of artifi cial insulin by means of injection or insulin pump, combined with healthy eating and exercise. As Type 1 diabetes usually develops in children and young adults (although it can occur at any age) it is often referred to as ‘early onset’. • TYPE 2 In Type 2 diabetes, the body still produces insulin but not enough for the body’s needs and the insulin it does produce is not used effectively – this is known as insulin resistance. 90% of adults in the UK with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes and the condition is more generally managed by a combination of dietary control and medication in the form of tablets.
