THE BEST OF THE IDIOT BOX by Michael Buffalo Smith

Yes, I waste far too many hours watching TV. I can’t help it, I love certain shows, and have be- come somewhat addicted to Netflix. Is there nothing they can’t come up with? Anywho, here are a few suggested shows. It’s just my way of try- ing to sway your entertainment tastes! . . . I loved Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.Honestly, I watched the regular Black Mirror one episode and it didn’t win me over, but this interactive TV show is something fresh and very cool sci-fi, where the viewer chooses the scenes and the end- ing. Lots of good ‘80’s music as well. Check it out!. . . Watched Gaga: Five Foot Two last night. I was never a Lady Gaga fan, but this doc won me over, showing her love for her Italian family and devotion to her art. It’s amazing to see the work she puts in. And fearless? Just watching her “fly” to the top of the Astrodome for the Super Bowl halftime show gave me high anxiety. . .

The Orville is back for season two. A comedy version of Star Trek, there are laughs, but also se- rious storylines. The best of both worlds. . . Star Trek Discovery will soon launch season two on CBS On Demand. Season one was killer so. . . Bruce Springsteen On Broadway is just great. Just Bruce, a guitar and a piano. Well, wife Patti joins in on a pair of songs, but his true life stories and heart felt songs are a treasure. . . Garth Brooks Live at Notre Dame. I am so glad to see the Garth-man back out doing what he does best. He’s a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, and one of our greatest entertain- ers. . . Caught some of The Walking Dead marathon over the Holidays. I’ve been watching since the very first episode, and am locked and loaded for the new season in February. Even without Rick, it’s still one of television’s best dra- mas, as in Fear the Walking Dead now that we have Jena Elfman, Mo Collins and Maggie Grace staring. . . Lots of comedy on Netflix, Adam Sandler 100% Fresh is funny, but very foul so be

prepared. His tribute to friend Chris Farley is touching. Ron White’s If You Quit Listening I’ll Shut Up is also funny, again kind of X-rated, not family friendly. Ellen’s Relatable is pretty hilari- ous, without being filthy. So there is that. . . Bird Box scared hell out of me. A Hollywood worthy film on Netflix, Sandra Bullock does an amazing job, as do “boy” and “:girl” and the whole Hee Haw gang. . . Depalma is a fine documentary on filmmaker Brian DePalma. So happy to see a shout out to his Phantom of the Paradise, one of my faves. . .Maniac is a really good series staring Hollywood A-lister Emma Stone. Sci-fi at its finest. . . Norm McDonald has a new talk show on Netflix with a very different format, each show features only one guest, and they are usually a friend of his. I very much enjoyed them all, in- cluding David Spade, Jane Fonda and my fa- vorite, Billy Joe Shaver. . . I enjoyed the CW crossover “Elseworlds” with Supergirl, the Flash and Green Arrowvery much. Then again, I’m the world’s most elderly comic book nerd. . . New Amsterdamis a great new medical series, and I still dig The Good Doctor with Norman Bates (Yes, I know). . . I miss Kevin Spacey a lot, but the final season of House of Cards was still good and Robin Wright is amazing. . . The Netflix doc, Tricky Dick and the Man in Black was quite interesting, exploring the relationship of President Nixon and Johnny Cash. . . Loudon Wainwright III’s Surviving Twin is a won- derful one man concert with lots of stories and good music. . . Still enjoying Supernatural, lo after all these years. . . Michael Douglas (who just won the Golden Globe for his role) and Alan Arkin carry the excellent movie The Komenski Method about an acting coach and is manager. . . The Coen Brothers have another winner with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a series of five short stories from the wild west, and when I say wild, I mean “Coen Brothers wild.” Good stuff. . . What are you watching on the idiot box? Let me know. I’d like to hear your thoughts. kudzoomag@yahoo.com•
