One for Buffalo: A Benefit Wild Wing Café, Spartanburg, SC December 4, 2018 Some of Upstate South Carolina’s leg-
endary residents gathered upstairs at Wild Wing on a Tuesday night to celebrate the works of Spartanburg author/musician Michael Buffalo Smith, also the publisher and founder of KUDZOO Magazine. Buffalo has been through a series of hospitalizations fol- lowing surgery back in July, mounting quite a pile of bills. Enter Angel Light Ministries, a

helping organization headed up by Buffalo’s friend Timothy Shook. Tim rounded up some well- loved area musicians in order to try and raise funds to assist his friend. A moderate size crowd (it was, after
all, Tuesday) gathered for some great fellow- ship and music. The show opened with two members of the Sweet T Trio- singer Teresa DeGeer and guitarist Dickey Brown, who treated the audience to a great set of cover tunes. Teresa nailed “Summertime” and

group that has been friends with both Buffalo and organizer Tim Shook since their forma- tion in 1981. Band guitarist/singer Daniel Jackson couldn’t perform due to work de- mands, but the rest of the band rocked out, beginning with a song penned by the late Steve Harvey, a long-time member of the band -“Long Gone.” Their set included prima- rily original songs from their soon to be re- leased third album, including “You Lie” and “Can’t Stand the Rain,” a song written by key- boardist/singer Carey Upton. Because it was Spartanburg, guitarist Randall Calvert sang the Toy Caldwell tune, “Midnight Promises.” It was a smoking set to be sure. The original plan saw several perform-
ers doing their own thing separately, but once they hit the stage, they turned into a kind of all-star band with Fayssoux McLean (Emmy- lou Harris); Franklin Wilkie (Marshall Tucker Band/Garfeel Ruff); Rickey Godfrey (Garfeel Ruff); Kym McKinnon (Electric City Blues Band/Zataban); and drummer Ronnie Low- ery.
