EUROPE & MIDDLE EAST EDITOR’S COMMENT A

s we come to the end of 2018, with an increasingly febrile atmosphere both economically and politically, it is hard to divine what course we should steer in the

year ahead, but this magazine wishes a safe voyage to all our readers. It is perhaps easier to look where we have

come from and the signs remain encouraging for developers, operators and owners of marinas. As a quarterly publication, I only need to write four ‘Comments’ each year and I have been re- reading my own words. In March, I noted that, according to the results of the annual Watersports Participation survey issued by British Marine, a record 3.96 million UK adults (7.4% of the UK adult population) participated in one or more of 12 core boating activities in 2017, the highest volume recorded since this research initiative was first launched in 2002. In the June issue, I reported on the presentation of the second series of Marina Industry Awards at the 35th Palma International boat show in Palma, Mallorca, which was as busy as I can remember. My ‘Comment’ in September recorded the decision

to unite this magazine with the separate edition previously published for South-East Asia and the

Pacific region to coincide with plans to expand into new territories, including the USA, Gulf Coast and Caribbean Sea, a process that has now begun. The programme for the World Marina Conference

in Athens was published in the same issue and having edited the papers for what was then called the International Marinas Conference, which took place at Amsterdam RAI in 1993, I can honestly say that this year’s event was the best I have ever attended, with an outstanding presentation from Jon Kalogerakis of JMK on anthropocentric corporate training, who shook his audience with a call to invest in people to go beyond excellence each and every time. Finally, a report from METSTRADE on page 31 of this issue confirms that the 31st edition offered an exceptional amount of business and networking opportunities and social gatherings. A popular area was the Marina & Yard Pavilion, where some 70 exhibitors reported a significant number of new and highly qualified visitors, including many purchasing managers. On balance, perhaps our industry doesn’t need to

worry about 2019 after all! David Young

Front cover: German marina Olympiahafen Schilksee was named from its hosting of the sailing events in the 1972 Olympic Games and the roof of the office occupied by the ‘Hafenmeister’ still carries the cauldron that bore the Olympic flame (see pages 22-23).
