Bespoke furniture for superyacht L

eading British furniture maker, William Garvey Ltd, recognised for its design of superyacht interiors, completing projects

from concept through to manufacture and installation, provided bespoke furniture for the superyacht ‘Avante’, which was completed on behalf of Struik & Hamerslag. Working closely and in association with the designers, Peter Mikic & Design Unlimited, William Garvey provided a survey, working drawings and then manufactured the furniture for seven bathrooms, as well as the joinery for panelling around windows in the main living quarters and air conditioning units. Speaking on behalf of William

Garvey, Managing Director Bill Garvey commented, “Current superyacht design trends give interior designers much more of a blank canvas these days, but there is a definite trend towards natural woods and finishes. I

understand that influential visitors to the last Design Unlimited Exhibition reported that the key influences for 2018 were to come from nature, with a decisive move towards natural materials, fibres and renewable resources”. However, it’s important to understand that yacht interiors must be timeless,” Bill added, “as if the market tried to align itself to trends from the residential market, the particular style could have

come on and gone in the time it takes to design a yacht’s interior to completion. Thus, natural really works as it will always be somewhat en-vogue”. Designer Peter Mikic agreed, “The

approach in this project was to reconfigure the space, introduce controlled natural light and design bespoke free-standing furniture. The execution was clean, comfortable and has the feel of a spacious apartment floating on the sea”.

In summarising, Bill Garvey said, “When we embarked on this project, our team knew that it was critical to ensure that the teak was sourced from ethically sound and sustainable sources and we shall continue to be faithful to this ethos on any future maritime projects that we undertake. “A superyacht is a lot easier to make

feel like a home and be furnished as one, with concessions to the nautical setting being less severe and more subtle and the ability to use a wider range of none yacht-specific furniture and decorations. With a superyacht, therefore, there is a greater choice between whether you want to make your yacht feel more like a land-based house or go all out with making sure people don’t forget that they are on a yacht.” William Garvey info@williamgarvey.co.uk www.williamgarvey.co.uk

Zero-emission forklift

The first commercially available, zero-emission, large capacity forklift for boatyards has been unveiled by Wiggins Lift Co Inc of California. The Wiggins Yard eBull is fully electric and has adopted high voltage, lithium- ion batteries, which are more resilient and longer-lasting than the lead-acid batteries typically used on smaller forklift trucks employed in warehouses. Wiggins partner in the

It really can be a matter of life or death to understand the dangers of some inferior, below-water level fixtures. Any hole in a vessel’s hull is a potential weak point, so using the right fitting is absolutely essential. Lee Sanitation Ltd, which became a major distributor for New Zealand-based Tru Design glassfibre nylon composite fit- tings in 2011, has announced the launch of the latest range of these revolutionary fit-and-forget products, which include skin fittings that have been designed for much thicker hulls.

Due to their construction from

precision-moulded, glass-reinforced, nylon composite, Tru Design thru hulls skin fittings are immensely strong. They offer the same level of strength, but at a much lighter weight compared to the ferrous alternatives available. They also eliminate all corrosion and bonding problems associated with electrolysis. The material is also unaffected by

petrol, diesel and chemicals associated with anti-fouling paints, including copper coatings. It is resistant to ultra-violet light and will not discolour

with the sun’s rays. All fittings are able to withstand an operating temperature of minus 20 deg C. to 100 deg C. and, like many other fittings from the Tru Design range, conform to ISO 9093-2, ABYC H27, Bureau Veritas. They are suitable for all types of craft, including those constructed with hulls of aluminium, wood, steel, composite and GRP. Lee Sanitation Ltd info@leesan.com www.leesan.com
