BOAT TRANSPORT 17 EYEBROW

The ‘Diamantgracht’ delivers a deck cargo of

yachts to the Caribbean island of Martinique.

great opportunities for shippers to provide the transport. “If people are prepared to pay, then we

can take them almost anywhere,” agreed “Schuurman.

Semi-submersible Typically, a Lift-On, Lift-Off ship will have a capacity of 240 tons on the cranes, with an average LOA of 40-45 m on deck. Anything bigger than that is usually carried on a submersible carrier known as a Float-On, Float- Off.

Dockwise Yacht Transport is now part of the

huge Sevenstar operation and its impressive submersible ships can carry yachts of up to 165 m. On arrival at the pick-up point, the ship floods down to form a temporary marina. The yachts are moored over their reserved berth and divers position the necessary supports for the passage. The ship then pumps out the water, so the yachts settle gently on to their cradles before being secured to the dried-out deck. When under way, special spray covers protect the yachts from the worst of the weather. Some yacht crew can sail aboard these submersible ships, with access to entertainment and other amenities, such as a small swimming pool, canteen and media centre, but the

numbers are limited and most yachts will be transported without their crews.

Pirate attacks Another big advantage of moving a yacht by ship through sensitive areas is protection against pirates, which are still active in certain parts of the world. It is simple common sense for those sailing leisure yachts to avoid travelling unescorted or unprotected in regions that are subject to attack. Sander Schuurman of Sevenstar Yacht

Transport agrees. “Always go with a carrier through troubled regions,” he advises. “I can’t disclose how we protect our ships, but we do so very effectively and precautions are always being taken against all potential threats.” Carriers are also linked into a comprehensive

intelligence network, which helps to outwit any pirate attacks. Moving a yacht isn’t just about getting the

hull from A to B, which is why the expertise and experience of carriers such as Sevenstar Yacht Transport is so important as clients can take advantage of a whole raft of additional services, such as a pre-departure hull survey (typically for yachts over £1 million in value), professional shrink-wrapping and all- important insurance cover.
