Moving a yacht by ship
T
ransporting a large boat to a new berth in a different country on the deck of a cargo ship has become a regular occurrence in recent years
and, according to Richard Klabbers, Managing Director of Sevenstar Yacht Transport BV, this is because the market is now open to all boat- owners and it is financially viable to deliver yachts over both short and longer distances. Amsterdam-based Sevenstar Yacht
Transport, part of the Spliethoff Group – ship-owners for almost 100 years and now operating over 100 vessels – carries yachts as either its main cargo or as part of another load. The most suitable ships are equipped with massive deck cranes as many destinations simply do not have the necessary quayside facilities. Because cargo ships sail to all parts of the world, it is often possible to reach remote regions, such as the mid-Pacific, South America or even the Arctic Circle. “The popular cruising areas are becoming

very crowded during the season,” said Sander Schuurman of Sevenstar Yacht Transport, which has its own dedicated yacht carriers, but also charters vessels to reach destinations that are off the beaten track. “Many adventurous yacht-owners are keen to reach exotic locations, but this means many thousands of miles of

The rules for charter vessels are being changed
