The Pioneer View
As I write this article, a bullying survey is released today. Children want adults to show each other more respect, with four out of 10 (41%) seeing grown-ups bullying each other in the past six months.
Research among 1,001 children aged 11 to 16 by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, suggests worrying numbers of children see adults setting a bad example. Children in that age group highlighted adults who behaved poorly to each other face-to-face, online or in the media. Some 97% said they would like to see more respect shown between grown-ups.
It comes after many reports of a bullying culture in numerous high-profi le workplaces in England, including the Palace of Westminster.
This year, having witnessed signifi cant bullying and harassment as well as other injustices that run counter to my own value system and the values that underpin the Growing Compassionate Community Charity, I have been challenged by a simple quote:
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” And its earliest form was by John Stuart Mill, who said in 1867: “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”
This quote has been very evident in some signifi cant
news stories. For me, one that comes readily to mind is that of Professor of Psychology Christine Blasely Ford in the case of the Brett Kavanagh nomination to the Supreme Court. Whether you believe her story is irrelevant. She took on the powerful establishment and challenged its prejudices and values at much cost to herself. She acted and did something.
Doing nothing and simply walking by, ignoring what we are witnessing, helps no-one and condones the behaviour.
So, let’s be challenged by the courage of Christine Blasely Ford and challenge some of these behaviours when we see them and other injustices when we come across them. We need to fi nd the courage to stand up for the marginalised, whoever they are, wherever they are, and help them to fi nd their voice.
Christmas is on the horizon and a theme commonly associated with it is promoting good will to all people. Maybe we could look for ways to be channels of good will this Christmas and not to simply walk on by.
Merry Christmas. Peter Jones
