County Councillor Update Broadstone Chamber of Trade & Commerce

Another year has fl own by, where did it go?!

November was a busy month. I took one of our young horsewomen into Dorchester with a petition asking that the speed limit on the Blandford Road as it enters the village from the A31 in the north, be reduced from 60mph. This is a dangerous bit of road, narrow and winding, with high hedges and poor visibility, and very frightening for horses and their riders.

The good news is that the County Council agreed that the speed limit could be reduced to 40mph on that stretch, not such good news is that it will take some years before it is done. There are 100 similar requests from other areas in the pipeline, currently the Council only budgets for 10 per year. However there are things that we can do ourselves in the meantime, and I will take some suggestions to the Parish Council at once.

Suez, operating the tip at Beacon Hill, has put forward an application to extend the license for the tip for another 10 years, as we suspected. I don’t know when it will be considered, but I will publicise the date as soon as I know. We may only get seven days notice of the application coming forward to the Parish Council.

The Safe Passage organization took a request to Dorchester for the County Council to agree to take in three child refugees each year for 10 years, and this was agreed unanimously. On the 80th anniversary of Kindertransport, Lord Dubs, aims for the Government to agree to accept 10,000 child refugees over 10 years, and to fund each county to care for these children, but so far very few have arrived. Meanwhile these children are living in refugee camps, usually without their parents, often ill and inadequately housed and fed.

Now we are all thinking about Christmas and buying presents for the family. Please spare a thought for those with little to look forward to, and donate something to the Food Bank in Corfe Mullen, or a small something for the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal being collected for the Homeless at Wimborne Town Council. A very Happy Christmas to you all.

The Chamber of Trade challenges you to fi nish your Christmas shopping in Broadstone. Explore the nooks and crannies of Moor Road, or the strangely named Station Approach (old timers will know why!). There are retail delights in Dunyeats Road, and more are to be found in the bustling Broadway.

We are very lucky to have such a vibrant shopping area and it is well worth your while spending a few moments visiting stores that you have not been in previously. Prepare to be surprised! One of the many aims of the Chamber is to support our colleagues in retail, especially during these diffi cult times. Buying your day- to-day goods, and your special one-off presents locally makes sense – you can talk to the knowledgeable and experienced retailers to fi nd exactly what you need.

All businesses – and not just retailers – can benefi t from networking as well as the information that the Chamber can provide to help the running of a commercial concern. At the end of January we will be having a ‘big’ open business meeting to which all traders in Broadstone are to be invited and this will be a great opportunity to meet the movers and shakers in our area. Details to follow.

All that now remains is to wish all readers a very happy Christmas, and a prosperous 2019.
