Raising speed awareness is the primary purpose of Community Speed Watch. We do that by being as visible as possible, usually operating on roads and at times that are expected to be busy.
Just being seen is not enough to deter speeding, it’s necessary for speeding motorists to be made aware that they have been seen and that’s what Speed Watch reports enable. Recording details of speeding vehicles is not as straightforward as people might think.
The registration number, colour and make have to match and it’s quite easy to make mistakes. Some registration numbers, especially personalised ones, can be difficult to read and record correctly. The number 8 can be made to look like the letter B for instance. In recording vehicle details, we are restricted to the set of 18 colours defined by DVLA and used in the Police National Computer (PNC). A very dark blue car could easily be mistaken for a black car. If we can get the model too,
that’s a bonus and it confirms the make if there’s any doubt. The written reports and the voice recordings made during the sessions are used to make the reports.
They are sent to Dorset Road Safe, validated and processed to send polite letters to the keepers of speeding vehicles. The letters say that no offence has been committed, but the vehicle has been seen speeding.
When a vehicle has been seen speeding twice in a 12 month period, there’s a slightly different letter, informing the keeper that further action will be taken if there is a third occurrence. Further action means a visit from uniformed officers. In Corfe Mullen we’ve only seen a very small number of repeat speeders and, so far, none of them have received a third letter and a visit.
