Pac-Man can guide you through society’s maze

New research into one of the most influential videogame characters of all time reveals as much about contemporary capitalism as it does about the history of gaming. From consumption to addiction, and dance music to the welfare

state, the work by Dr Alex Wade offers a guide through the maze of western society through the lens of Pac-Man. Published by Zero Books, ‘The Pac-Man Principle: A User’s Guide to

Made of clay: The Jaguar I-Pace

Model sets Pace at design museum

A full-size clay model of the Jaguar I-Pace, created by world- renowned designer Ian Callum, took centre stage at Scotland’s first dedicated design museum. The I-Pace exhibit was unveiled

at the grand opening of the new V&A Design Museum in Dundee, which was aimed at highlighting the achievements of Scottish designers past and present. The clay model showed the

painstaking and elaborate design process behind the firm’s first all- electric vehicle, as well as the steps followed to create all new Jaguars. Ian Callum, Jaguar director of

design, said at the museum opening: “Automotive design is hugely complex. Although much of the design is done digitally, clay models are still important – they are our first chance to see the car in reality. As a child l was inspired to become a car designer at Jaguar

and have been lucky enough to live out that dream. “Scotland has a long history of

design excellence and the V&A Dundee is a fantastic opportunity to showcase this on a global stage. It has been an honour as a Scot to be involved with the opening of the new museum, and I hope our I- Pace exhibit can help inspire the next generation of design talent.” Fifty years after writing letters, as

a schoolboy, to Jaguar asking for help to become a car designer, Ian Callum has become world-renowned. Dundee is a fitting location to

display the all-electric I-Pace – as Scotland’s only ‘Go Ultra Low City’, it has one of the highest number of charging points in the UK. The new museum will bring

touring exhibitions from the V&A and other international museums to Scotland, as well as curating its own exhibitions in future years.

Pac-Man: He’s a pill-popping, yellow pie chart Third rhino calf for park

West Midland Safari Park is celebrating the birth of its third southern white rhino in three years. Second-time-mum, Ailsa, gave

birth to the male rhino calf following a pregnancy of 16 months. Under the watchful eye of eight-

year-old mum, the little one was given a brief health check by his keepers and at just 48 hours old already weighed in at 67 kilograms (10 and a half stone)! The baby boy is another success

for the park’s white rhino breeding programme, following the birth of three-year-old male, Ekozu, and Fahari, who celebrated her first birthday earlier this month. Head of wildlife Angela Potter

said: “Each new rhino birth is a success story for the European Endangered Species Programme and for the species as a whole. “Although he just missed World

Rhino Day, we hope his birth will raise some much needed attention to the plight of all the rhino species in the wild.”

Capitalism’ focuses on the iconic ‘pill-popping, yellow pie chart’, who has appeared in over 60 video games on virtually every games platform ever released since 1980.

‘The pursuit of equality through the pleasure principle of consumption is also good for profits’

Although iconic, Pac-Man has not been subject to sustained critical

analysis until now. Dr Wade’s book helps to fill that gap, providing an extensive but accessible analysis of the influence of Pac-Man on the way that we live in contemporary western societies. Dr Alex Wade, senior research fellow, Birmingham City University,

said: “Pac-Man arises primarily from consumption and, as we all need to eat, it’s easy to see why the traditional distinctions between work and play, private and public, black and white, and male and female do not apply to this character. Despite this seemingly diverse approach to gaming, the pursuit of equality through the pleasure principle of consumption is also good for profits.”
