Tender puts firm in charge
Solihull-based UK Power Reserve (UKPR) has awarded a second major energy storage tender to US company Fluence. The tender is for a battery-based energy
storage initiative, the second to be awarded to Fluence. UKPR secured the rights to
these ultra-fast energy storage projects in the government’s 2016 Capacity Market auction, and will help the company produce the 200 megawatts of electricity that it has promised to supply to the National Grid by 2021. Fluence is already committed to supplying UKPR with battery- based energy storage with a capacity of 60 mw, and the latest tender will double that. The full 120 mw of projects represents the
world’s largest contracted energy storage portfolio transaction, and will utilise Fluence’s Advancion platform, an industrial-strength energy storage solution designed to provide the
highest dependability for long-term operations. Sam Wither (pictured), head of UKPR, said:
“By splitting our portfolio into two 60mw sets of projects, we’ve had the opportunity to fully assess the market and took a nimble approach to keep up with this rapidly evolving space. Fluence and its Advancion technology again proved their worth throughout this highly competitive process. “We continue to make
strong progress on the initial phase of battery projects with Fluence.” Stephen Coughlin, CEO of
Fluence, said: “By combining our ability to deliver robust solutions at this scale with UK Power Reserve’s deep
market expertise, these projects will be ready to provide ongoing value for the UK grid and its consumers in less than a year.” UKPR was recently acquired by Sembcorp
Industries, a Singapore-headquartered utilities, marine and urban development group.
