of locations across the country to take part in a pilot project, which aims to raise the profile of local retailers via the online world. Businesses around the city play their part by
taking photos of their products and services and posting them to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram alongside the hashtags #WDYT and #LICHFIELD The scheme – backed by Lichfield Business
Improvement District (BID) and Stoke and Staffordshire Growth Hub – has already seen the city shoot up the ‘digital noise’ charts, due to the growth in its postings on outlets such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
‘Let’s be clear, our city centre is not dying – it is evolving’
Previously, Lichfield was only rated at 174 in
the country for this, but has now jumped up to number 22. This is down to the efforts of a dedicated
team which ensures the posts are seen by a wider audience – which has now helped increase the city's digital output. In addition, a support day has been held
where retailers were given advice and help to open Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts so they can get on board the campaign. Businesses gain help and support to get on
various social media channels and receive weekly reports that show how well they are doing and the impact of their uploads.
David Tomalin: Social media is an ‘exciting opportunity’
BID chairman Paul Maddox said: “Our
businesses know that the traditional High Street has changed and is continuing to change – burying your head in the sand is not an option if you want to survive. “ “Let’s be clear, our city centre is not dying – it
is evolving. Lichfield needs to be forward thinking to take advantage of that change. We want people who search and socialise online to see what this city, its retailers and its services, has to offer and choose Lichfield as their preferred destination to shop, eat and enjoy.” Lichfield BID manager David Tomalin added:
“This is such an exciting opportunity for businesses to explore the world of social media, develop new audiences for their products and services and step in to the on-line world.”
