Wiltshire schools conquer the ‘Road to Rio’!
This year’s Wiltshire Council’s Big Pledge Road to Rio challenged schools to complete the 9281km from London to Rio in just eight weeks (4 June- 29 July)! Starting in London, schools signed up as a team to complete a journey around the world with 20 stops at previous host cities before reaching 2016 host city of Rio de Janeiro!
A total of 47 schools, including 15,714 pupils, took part this year, which included 52 teams. 31% of the teams achieved at least the bronze distance or above with 62% of those school teams reaching the gold standard. Schools and pupils undertook a number of different activities to cover the kilometres as part of the challenge including regular sports activities, sports weeks and the ‘Daily Mile’. The Manor Primary School in Melksham stated, “The children pledged to walk at least 1 km 3 times a week, prior to lessons and to undertake additional walks during playtime and lunchtimes. The children also logged additional activities that they took part in during school time and outside of school using the pedometers donated by Wiltshire Council.” Schools also incorporated the challenge in to other areas of the
academic day including maths – adding up the distances, geography and history – reviewing the city/ country they had reached and art – creating torches and Olympic posters.
The huge success of this year’s Big Pledge Road to Rio challenge is illustrated by the fact that many schools stated they will continue with their ‘Daily Mile’ and reported back on a variety of benefits the challenge had produced. The Manor School reported that “The children have all thoroughly enjoyed the big walk and importantly have not seen it as an activity or lesson; it is more of an experience. They have enjoyed the time together walking and talking to each other and on some mornings listening and dancing to music as they walk! This time has helped children develop their social and emotional wellbeing as they are learning to socialise in a different way than they would at lunchtime or playtime.”
Following the success of the 2016 event, look out for the 2017 Big Pledge challenge!
