Devizes School had nearly 30 girls take part in the 5k Race4life at Lydiard Park in Swindon. The girls were incredibly committed to their training sessions in the term leading up to the race. They were also very committed to raising lots of money for Cancer Research. They raised a total of £1,200! A fantastic effort by these students who showed sheer determination, courage and excellence in participating for this cause.

Camp Xtra 2016

Camp Xtra is a week-long activities course run during the summer holidays at Devizes School. It is believed to be one of the largest activity courses in the county.

Camp Xtra was the brainchild of Charles Bartholomew (former chairman of Wadworth’s Breweries) During the early 1990s he wanted the young people of Devizes to have the chance, during the summer holidays, of participating in fun, educational activities at an affordable cost to their parents.

Do your family want to lose weight and be healthier in 2017?

This 10-week programme is available for families with children aged from 2 to 16 years old, who want to make changes to their lifestyle!

Alive ’N’ Kicking has proven to be a great success for families that want to lose weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle. We support and empower all family members to achieve their goals, alongside other families doing exactly the same.

Nikki, from Pinehurst, said: “We all feel loads better about ourselves

because we’re being so much healthier with what we eat and getting far more exercise in fun ways. Alive ‘n’ Kicking was just the kick we needed to regain control and get back into better habits. The physical health aspect is also really important, as today’s lifestyles can be very sedentary. We decided to join forces and ring the changes together. It has been absolutely brilliant and I feel so proud of what we’ve achieved. People shouldn’t feel ashamed of asking for help – children often ignore or rebel against what their own parents say, so having lots of encouragement and information from others has been really effective.”

The twins now snack on fruit instead of junk. Fatty, sugary food such as cake and chocolate is now reserved

In 2016, the sun shone, the Olympics were on and 180 local children had a fantastic time participating in a wide- range of activities from Tae Kwondo to Fencing and Animation to Cookery. A varied programme run by experienced and enthusiastic coaches and teachers meant a busy, informative and fun –filled week. They were ably assisted by Devizes School student volunteers and young leaders who ensured that the activities ran smoothly and the young people were well looked after. The young leaders also ran lunchtime Dodgeball sessions which proved to be

for treats and meals are healthy. Besides overhauling their diet, they have also significantly improved their fitness levels through regular and varied physical activity. Nikki said: “We make sure we do something active every day. Swimming, walking, running, circuit training – you name it, it’s on our weekly schedule. It’s not a chore though because we really enjoy it and are feeling the benefits now too.” The free scheme, run by Swindon Borough Council, introduces participants to a wide range of activities and provides a wealth of dietary information.
