Corsham Junior Badminton Club U14’s (representing the Mid Wilts Junior League) are the very first Silver Medal Winners following the National Junior Badminton League Finals!!! Congratulations to the players, club and league in what is a tremendous result for MW District and Wiltshire.

This inaugural competition took place at BE HQ at Milton Keynes on the weekend of 11 & 12 June. U12 & U 16 Finals were on the Saturday and U14’s on the Sunday. It was decided just to enter an U14 team and yet what a result they achieved!!

The competition was played to the new NBL format. Each match against opposing teams consisted of 5 rubbers with two games to 9 points followed by a decider if needed to 5pts, with no extended play in any games. This quick fire format was made more exciting and tactically challenging by the introduction of the “Powerplay” shuttle. Coloured with a pink painted base this could be chosen just once in each rubber by both teams. It could only be chosen on serve but used in any of the three games. If Powerplay is chosen and

the rally won it counts for 2 points to the serving team but only 1 point to the opposing team if the rally is lost. Players quickly pick up to when to use it and it adds to the intrigue and tactical “nouse” of the players particularly as there was no coaching allowed once a rubber had started.

Corsham played in Group A consisting of 3 other teams: Durham, Wigan and Kestevens (Lincs) and won all matches comfortably, with two 5-0 wins and a 4-1. This set up a semi against the tough Group B runners up St Ursula’s JBC from Bristol. Each rubber was nail bitingly close and clever use of the Powerplay Shuttle saw a remarkable 4-1 win.

The final was then set against the Group B winners, Swift U14’s from Surrey who have 160 registered players and a waiting list!! Swifts had already won the U12’s and U16’s the previous day. Corsham pushed them all the way. Will Cooper lost in two to the very talented Swifts No1 player. Emily Mc Kenzie won her first game but lost the second setting up a tense third. Having saved the “Powerplay” option to the last game she chose to use it at 3-2 up. Unfortunately the rally was lost and immediately her opponent now at 3-3 (who had also saved up her

Powerplay) used it and in winning the rally won the decider 5-3. That’s NBL format for you... Max Bryant and Will Cooper in the boys doubles then faced the talented Swift pair and went down in two sealing the gold medal spot for the Surrey outfit. The remaining two rubbers continued to be played with Emily joined by Nirmala George for the girls doubles who outshone their opponents 9-4, 9-6. The mixed rubber of Max and Nirmala saw a very close first game before finally succumbing in two.

Medals were presented by the famous Gail Emms to the whole team including the team manager Steve Hulbert.
