Olympic Rings

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy (RWBA) opened their Sports Day this summer by collectively forming the Olympic Rings to celebrated the Olympics in Rio. The morning involved the whole school participating in a variety of unusual activities including a swimming gala, dodge ball, bench ball, kwik cricket, handball, benchball, tug of war and ultimate Frisbee. Alongside this pupils entered the usual throwing

events of Javelin, Shot, Discus, Triple and Long Jump.

After lunch all pupils made their way to the school fields for the track events

Change4Life Programme

The concept of Change for life has been adopted in many Primary Schools across Wiltshire. Lead practitioner Alex Buchalik from Lydiard Park Academy Swindon explains "The Change for life Programme has been a major success. It has helped promoted healthy lifestyles for young people, encouraging healthy eating and regular exercise. Some of the coaches we deploy to schools have expertise

in a variety of fun activities, such as dodgeball, boxing and football. We trying to promote a positive lifestyle paths to follow and it seems to be working"

Pupils have been invited to various workshops such as an audience with Adam Jones welsh international, healthy eating and strongman seminars with Lawrence Shahlaei

current European Strongest man. Change for life coach Richard Jones also helps students with positive outlooks and self esteem promotion. He is also a mean boxer!

If any primary schools in Swindon would like a Change for life club to run in their school, feel free to contact Alex Buchalik onbuchalika@ lydiardparkacademy.org.uk

Running is thriving within Wiltshire!

The new England Athletics RunTogether has been launched in the county so you can now register, access more information about groups within the county and book onto runs through the new website. www.runtogether.co.uk. England Athletics, Wiltshire Council alongside Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) continue to deliver workshops to train and support leaders and coaches to offer a high level of leading and coaching. The school gate runs are continuing to grow across the county with a new group that has been taking

place at the Oasis Academy, Longfield and Trowbridge. These groups are designed to meet at the school gates and exercise straight after you have dropped your little ones off at school.

Many groups supported Mental Health Awareness Week in October and organised #runandtalk groups which were to highlight that running groups can support and help immensely with mental health. Below is a picture of a group Rob Warwick from Chippenham Harriers (mental health ambassador)

who raised £40 with a #runandtalk run for the charity MIND. We have seen an increase of mental health ambassadors within groups across the county who are leaders that individuals can talk to for support with mental health issues.

If you are interested in starting running as a complete beginner or wanting to get back into running there is group everyone across the county just visit www.runtogether.co.uk . We would like to target as many groups of people and give everyone the opportunity to run

Bishop Wordsworth's School Sporting Landscape

While in the midst of the rugby season and with impressive performances so far from all teams it seems apt to highlight the success of our senior rugby 7s side who reached the semi-finals of the Roslyn Park School Sevens competition last spring and hope to go all the way this year. At the helm will be Cadan Murley who represented England School Boys shortly after Roslyn Park and again this term along with Paddy Case has been a part of England training camps.

Other successes on a national stage came in the form of the cross

country teams making their national finals while Jaymee Domoney went on to place 5th nationally in the track and field champs posting a personal best along the way. Other noticeable individual achievements have seen Spencer Armstrong compete in the Kayaking Olympic Hopes competition and Milo Kantolinna has made huge strides in the cricket world captaining the South West of England U15s. A number of boys have made their respective regional teams for basketball, but one in particular Matthieu Rident deserves special mention for his tireless work with our lower years, developing basketball in the school and beyond. His humility, respect

of others and self-determination saw him awarded the inaugural Team BWS Values prize.

Looking back on our team successes, for the first time both of our lower age group tennis teams have made it through to knock outs, one game from

regional finals. Our football teams again delivered at local cup and county level, while our athletes narrowly missed out on making nationals despite posting their best ever score at regionals.

and afternoon opening ceremony. To begin we had the RWBA dance troop perform a vibrant dance, followed by the RWBA brass band playing the national anthem. Then the track events

kicked off. The running talent on show meant a number of long standing school records were broken. A great day was had by all. Charlie, Head of Physical Education
