GOOD EATS
Gyro City Grill 3465 Braselton Hwy #170 Dacula, GA (470)238-3400
It was quite by accident that my friend
Hal and I happened across the Gyro City Grill in Dacula, Georgia around lunch time on the way home from aul Hornsby’s Muscadine Recording Studio in Macon. I really enjoy road trips with Hal. I always know our food choices are going to be a bit more exotic than say, Cracker Barrel (which I do love as well!). A staunch vegetarian, Hal can spot the cool veggie spots with the eye of a hawk. The first thing I noticed when we entered
was the smells. The unmistakable aroma of genuine Greek food filled the air. The second thing I picked up on was that most of the satff were true Greeks, often conversing with one an- other in their native tongue. My first thoughts were, real Greeks, cooking real Greek food. I began to salivate. No, really, I did. The menu had quite a lot to offer. from
various soups, salads and apetizers to gyros and souvlaki, Greek specialties and kabobs, platters and grilled meats and for those who prefer the good ol’ American thing, lots of choices of subs and burgers. Of course, that wasn’t why we were here! I came close to ordering one of my old fa-
vorite appetizers, the spanakopita (spinich pie) but I didn’t- this time! The fried calamari looked good as did the Greek Feta Fries, but I
knew I had to have my falafel! The tastey fried ground chick peas with herbs, served with tzatziki sauce. Yum! Too many choices! Hummus? Baba
Ghanoush (eggplant) ? Stuffed grape leaves? Endless salad choices, Greeek salads - love the feta!
When it comes to gyros or souvlaki, you
can have it with pita or as a wrap. served with your choice of fries, Greek lemon potatoes, po- tato salad of vegetable of the day. The first one on the list caught my eys so I ordered it. Called “Tae Largest and Best Gyro in Town,”the award-winning gyro features chunks of beef and rotisserie lamb. lettce and tomato, onions and tzatziki sauce. ($8.95) Boy howdy, is it ever good. There are several other entree choice, but I know what I like and latched onto it. Treat yourself with one of many dessert
choices. Again, I went for my old favorite, the Baklava. Layers of buttered filo dough, spices and nuts, backed and soaked in a honey syrup. ($3.95)
The service was really slow the day we
dropped in, but it was quite crowded. I can only speak for myself when I say that my food was very good. Give it a try! FYI, there are two other locations. One in
Hiram, GA and one in Columbus, OH. •
