Reviews by Michael Buffalo Smith

Buffalo Grove Select Chardon- nay 2015 A good friend

gifted me with a large bottle of Buffalo for my recent birthday. I figured the only rea- son she picked that particular bottle was because it, like me, is called Buffalo. Yes, once I am finished enjoying the wine I do fully intend to keep the bottle as a part of my never end- ing collection of Buf-

falo themed gifts. Besides the cool name, I was actually quite surprised by the quality of this California white wine. When it comes to budget friendly wine,

I usually opt for Woodbridge Lightly Oaked chardonnay. (Oddly enough, the same friend turned me onto the Woodbridge several years ago). I have discovered that when it comes to chardonnay, I like mine a little like Merle Haggard - oaky. Buffalo Grove is also lightly oaked. Score a point! The nose has aromas of apples and

other fruit, although the apple is prominent. Of course, it just makes sense that the fruit aspect would carry over into the palette, which it does. It’s fruity but with hints of vanilla. Is this the best chardonnay I’ve ever

had? No, not even close. That said, it really is

good, especially given the price. Buffalo Grove chardonnay pairs well

with pork, poultry, rich fish such as salmon or tuna, lobster and of course vegetarian meals. Give it a try.

Sierra Pines Chardonnay Sierra Pines Winery 2016 Sierra Pines is one of the best wines I

have tasted for the price tag. I picked this up at Lidl for about $2.95. That’s right, less than three bucks. How good could it be, right? I mean, as a teenager we would pay about that for the cheap Boone’s Farm wine. That was back in the days of the cheapest wine and beer and cigarettes we could find. Imagine my surprise when I popped

the cork and the aroma of fresh fruit and oak filled my nose. On the pallette, it is clean and well balanced with notes of yellow apple and pear with a healthy dose of toasty oak. This wine actually tastes good! It’s dry, but not too dry. A true value. Sierra Pines is good wine, and pairs

well with pork, fish and poultry. I challenge you to find a better wine in this price range. •
