Embark on a journey of architectural exploration as this cruise introduces us to a myriad of design styles and rare private viewings, often by a member of the family, including stately homes, baronial castles, private apartments and a neo-Gothic mansion.
Set in 500 acres of ancient woodland and mature gardens, Finlaystone House is seat of the current Chief of the Clan MacMillan.
On the Isle of Bute, we wonder at the Victorian neo-Gothic mansion of Mount Stuart House, ahead of visiting Dumfries House with its neoclassical architecture and Thomas Chippendale furniture.
Before sailing Britain’s longest sea loch, Loch Fyne, the imposing Brodick Castle awaits. This strategically important castle was developed between the 1200s and 1600s, with the later addition of an 1800s stately home wrapped around it.
From Strachur, we venture to the home of Sir Charles and Lady Maclean, Strachur House and its sheltered flower garden, before enjoying a private visit to Ardkinglas House completed in 1907 for Sir Andrew Noble and incorporating the then latest technology.
At the iconic Inveraray Castle a behind the scenes tour beckons. A castle has stood on the shores of Loch Fyne since the 1400s, although the castle we visit today was inspired by a sketch by Vanbrugh, architect of both Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard.
Hunterston Castle is a hidden gem. The 16th century tower house was the seat of the Clan Hunter and replaced in 1799 by Hunterston House. Our final architectural gem is the sumptuous Ardgowan House, held by the Stewart family since the early 15th century.
