TRAINING & EVENTS CHAMBER BUSINESS TRAINING

The Chamber offers a wide and diverse range of training support for members and non-members alike, all with the aim of enhancing skills, developing knowledge and driving the growth of your business

The Chamber can help your staff to thrive…

By Vicki Thompson (pictured), the Chamber’s Business Training Manager.

Given that this month’s Business Network theme is Skills and Employability, now seems as good a time as any to take a step back and assess just what makes businesses of all shapes and sizes successful. It’s a widely held belief – and

something that I certainly advocate – that a company’s biggest asset is its people. It has to be – they are the ones implementing the plans and strategies that the business has identified as key to achieving its aims and objectives. So if that’s the case, surely it is

absolutely imperative that they are given the backing and support to carry out their roles to the best of their ability. That – as well as developing a positive culture – enables your staff to feel valued and fulfilled and the knock-on effect for the business is obvious and profound. While you may already have

talented individuals on the payroll – after all, that’s why you hired them in the first place – they still need backing and the tools to reach and sustain their potential if they are to make a positive long-term impact on your organisation – and not somebody else’s. Businesses change, priorities

change and the world changes and as such we are always learning, always striving for improvement – we can always enhance our abilities and skillsets; whether a business

‘We can always enhance our abilities and skillsets; whether a business leader, middle- manager or team member’

leader, middle-manager or team member. Perhaps equally as important is

that employees are custodians of a company’s values. Training and development isn’t just about practical learning and qualifications. After all, these types of skills can be learned and re-learned; harnessing more personal, behavioural skills can be more deeply embedded. Staff must embrace and be an embodiment of a company’s visions and values if mission statements and the likes are going to have any real resonance and value with a business’s clients

and/or stakeholders. In an ever-changing business

world, the skillset of a business’s workforce can be the difference between a successful, productive organisation and one that falls behind. To stay competitive means you need good people with the right skills who, crucially, feel valued, appreciated and supported. Gone are the days when an

employee is left to do his or her job with little thought or interest given as to how they can develop and enhance not just their own careers but also that of the business they represent.

So what skills do you and your

workforce need to keep continually improving and what can you do to demonstrate that you are truly engaged in, and genuinely care about, the careers and development of your staff? The answer is likely to be

different from business to business, employee to employee. That’s why the Chamber offers a myriad of training and development options across multiple areas and disciplines, including: Leadership and Management; Digital Marketing; Core Business Skills – such as Sales and Marketing, Health and Safety, IT and Cloud Computing; Cyber Security; Finance and Personal Development - Apprenticeships and International Trade. The Chamber also offers

dedicated tailored training, unique to the business concerned, to identify specific training and development requirements within the business, which are addressed accordingly. There has never been a better, or

more important, time to consider what business training and development can do for your business.
