THE NEW JERSEY MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION a federated state association of NATIONAL ASSOCIATION for MUSIC EDUCATION News From Our Division Chairs Information regarding student enrollment, student to teacher ratio, budget and curricular vs. extracurricular pro-

grams are always available and updated. Curriculum, pacing guides and assessments are consistent in scope and sequence, bridging between grade levels

and schools. The program is considered an essential part of the fabric of the district and its successes. This level of proactivity needs the kind of time, attention, and commitment we all spent on our instruments as students of music. The memories of being in the practice rooms for countless hours preparing for that next lesson, recital, and concert. Well, now the rooms are a bit different, but the timeless dedication is the same now as it was then. The instruments are now our words and actions. Take some time to evaluate your role in this process, and what are you doing as individuals to become proactive in

your advocacy for your students, your program, your school, and your district. We all insist on our students practicing…let’s set the example for them!

Band Performance Adam Warshafsky

I’d like to congratulate all students and teachers who were part of the 2018 New Jersey All-State Bands. We were

honored to have Professor Jerry Luckhardt from the University of Minnesota conducting this year’s symphonic band and Professor Mary Schneider from Eastern Michigan University conducting this year’s wind ensemble. The concert at the NJPAC on February 24th was wonderful! Thank you so much to all those who worked so hard to make the weekend a huge success, especially the members of our NJ All-State Band Procedures Committee. It was also very exciting to watch and learn from so many wonderful band clinics and performances at the NJMEA

conference. We were fortunate to witness a number of rich presentations on topics such as large ensemble rehearsal technique, repertoire selection, wind chamber music, musical decision making, creative thinking in instrumental music, conducting technique and score study, among many others. Presenters traveled from across the country to share their knowledge and experience with us all for the purpose of continuing the growth of instrumental music in New Jersey. We are always looking for people who are interested in helping with the All-State Bands and/or are interested in

presenting band-related sessions at the NJMEA conference. If you have an interest, please reach out to me at awar- shafsky@mtsd.us and I can give you information on how to get involved for 2019. Best wishes for a wonderful remainder of the school year!
