ALL-WEATHER GOLFERS SPRING FASHION SHOW IN SUPPORT OF THE ALL-WEATHER BLOOD BIKERS

Blood Bikes Cumbria is group of volunteers who perform a vital role of transporting blood, tissue samples, medical records and medical equipment between hospitals in Cumbria, 365 days a year, in all weather. They were set up by Bill Bertham in 2014, a retired airline manager from Carlisle.

There are riders, drivers and controllers, all volunteers, who help the group move blood and medical samples between the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. In 2015, they were asked to help service both the Great North Air Ambulances. Blood Bikes Cumbria and Northumbria Blood Bikes work together to provide blood and frozen plasma 365 days a year to both air ambulances.

The money they save the NHS, would otherwise have to be paid to couriers or taxis.

Blood Bikes Cumbria is one of 39 such groups across the country operating under the auspices of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes.

The group operates six motorbikes and four cars and needs to raise over £37,000 a year to cover running costs. All volunteers must undergo special training for health and safety, a riding assessment and advanced training. They also have dedicated dispatchers taking the calls and allocating the work, all of whom are volunteers.

When Alison Graham’s Husband Brian, became a Blood Biker, she realised the incredibly vital work they do and decided that Blood Bikes Cumbria would be The Lady Captain’s Charity for 2018 at Cockermouth Golf Club.

The fundraising begins on Friday 23rd March, with a Fashion Show, showcasing clothes by Zebra Contemporary Clothing, Ruby and Bean, Little Ted Clothing and golf wear supplied by Gary Watson from Keswick Golf Club. There will also be a talk from Anne Marie Moffatt on Blood Bikes Cumbria.

Tickets are available at £5.00 to include a glass of wine, from Cockermouth Golf Club on 017687 76223, or Ruth at Zebra.
