The Four Pillar Plan Marilyn Lawrence MBTPA CNHC Bowen Technique

I have recently read and been very impressed by a book written by Dr. Rangan

Chatterjee, with the above title. Dr. Chatterjee, a practicing GP who you might have seen on BBC television, styles himself as a practitioner of progressive medicine. To him, this means

using the best of modern medicine and combining this with new information and knowledge about lifestyle, nutrition and complementary therapies.

In an interview in the magazine for the Federation of Holistic Therapists, he states that he and his patients utilise complementary therapies, and that: “Helping their clients to relax, sleep better and make healthier lifestyle choices is what complementary therapies are excellent at doing.”

So, what are these four pillars of health? According to Dr. Chatterjee, they are RELAX, EAT, MOVE and SLEEP.

He starts with RELAX. Given the busy, stressful lives so many people live, it is a good starting point, as so many illnesses are fuelled or even caused by resultant chronically-high cortisol levels in the bloodstream which can lead to inflammation, which in turn can lead to so many of our modern ills, such as Type 2 diabetes, IBS, auto immune conditions and even types of depression.

Cortisol is one of our ‘flight or fight’ hormones, produced when we face danger, historically when faced with an attacking lion or such like. Our modern lifestyles so often mean that we are constantly in flight or fight

mode and we are being attacked by our own lives.

So, at last we come to Bowen Therapy, normally associated more with the third principal MOVE, with its success in muscular skeletal issues.

However, another thing a Bowen treatment almost always does, is bring the client down from the high alert fight and flight stance of the sympathetic nervous system, to the relax and restore mode of the part of the nervous system called the parasympathetic.

During the 45 minutes to an hour of treatment, the gentle Bowen moves induce a deep sense of letting go, allowing for changes the body might need to take. Breathing becomes deeper and slower and sometimes gentle snoring can be heard! A sure sign of deep relaxation, alongside the often-gurgling guts, as digestive enzymes start to do their work.

This relaxation alone will not sort all problems. The other three pillars are equally important but this is often the starting point, allowing the others to be addressed more effectively.

So, I would recommend that you beg, borrow or buy the book (available in our excellent local bookshop) and come along to North Lakes Clinic to see how we can help, in all the Pillars, given the variety of therapies available.

I look forward very much to seeing some of you, to begin a new journey of health and wellbeing.
