ALL THE LATEST NEWS, VIEWS AND STORIES FROM AROUND YOUR LOCAL AREA:FEBRUARY/MARCH PADDLE PRIMARY - A STUDY OF OUR LOCALITY

This half-term, year 3 and 4 have changed their topic learning to ‘Cumbria – a study of our locality’. As a school, we decided that we wanted to take advantage of the beautiful place that we live in. We recognise that we have such magnificent geography, history, science and literature at out fingertips and we wanted to capitalise on this and open our pupil’s eyes to the outstanding resources and abundant adventures of Cumbria.

In addition to studying John Dalton, Eaglesfield’s most famous scientist, we are also studying the mountains of the Lake District. Year 4 went on a trip to Honister slate mine where they were taken on a very informative tour. We learnt about the volcanic properties of the Borrowdale valley and just how famous the Honister slate is! Did you know that Honister slate is the best slate in the world and that it can last 300-400 years due to the strength that the volcanic magma and ash give it! It was interesting to learn about the mining history in the area too.
