My name is Hayley Mctear, I’m 32 and a Third Year Podiatry Student from Salford University. I am originally from Maryport but left when I was 25. I moved to Salford in 2015 to study for my 3-year degree in Podiatry. I chose Podiatry, as I enjoy working with people and wanted to do something caring to help people keep healthy…. I suppose I also ‘just like feet’.
As part of my training, I have also learned how to perform surgery, which involves being able to administer local anaesthesia, muscular skeletal (biomechanical) assessment and wound care.

Podiatry is far more than just cutting toenails. A requirement of the degree course is a placement within the NHS, these are an excellent way to improve skills and work with a variety of people. However, Podiatry is also carried out in private clinics. I felt it was important for me to get some work experience within a private practice. I decided to ask on our Podiatry social media forum if anyone could offer me any work experience. Adele kindly offered but she thought that Cockermouth was too far away for me... not realising that I was from Cumbria and it was originally my home.
I have spent three days at Cockermouth Chiropody/Podiatry with Adele. I have met many of her lovely patients and had the pleasure of treating one or two of them. Adele has 30 years’ experience as a Podiatrist and was able to widen my knowledge and skills for my future career. I can now also compare the differences between private and NHS Podiatry clinics. I hope to return Cockermouth Chiropody/Podiatry and I will look forward to seeing you all in the future. Thanks so much for the experience Adele and her lovely team of staff.
