HEALTH PROMOTION supported by DEANS PHARMACY, WISHAW

Wishaw in North Lanarkshire has some of the highest deprivation rates in Scotland. As a result, the pharmacy team decided to work closely with young people in the area in a bid to halt the alarming rate at which they were taking up smoking. The pharmacy worked in partnership with Coltness High School, identifying a number of students who were regular smokers and engaging with them through various initiatives to assist them with smoking cessation.

JENNY MCKENNA, KYLE SQUARE PHARMACY, SPITTAL, RUTHERGLEN

Pre-registration pharmacist Jenny McKenna has displayed outstanding enthusiasm and ingenuity in health promotion in the pharmacy setting. Jenny had become very aware of the levels of high sugar, high fat, processed foods and drinks being consumed in the community and decided to play a part in tackling this. Jenny produced displays for the pharmacy such as ‘treat wise’, which contained accurately measured quantities of fats and oils present in common snacks and treats, and also ran a short educational session for pharmacy staff.

LLOYDSPHARMACY BELLSHILL, LANARKSHIRE

The team at Bellshill North had noticed the increasing numbers of patients, who were displaying clear signs of mental health disorders, particularly when collecting prescriptions. Lucy, the pharmacy manager, subsequently became a Pharmacy Mental Health Champion and then passed her knowledge on to the team to ensure they were helping these vulnerable patients. As a result, the team designed an easy-to-use tracking system, which involves the Mental Health Team referring patients to the pharmacy.

ROWLANDS PHARMACY, AUSTENS, SPRINGBURN, GLASGOW

The 2012 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) showed that Springburn’s Keppochhill area is the third most deprived area in Scotland and so the pharmacy team decided to raise local awareness of the benefi ts of lifestyle change. Pharmacist Lynsey went to the local college to promote a range of services which the pharmacy could offer, including blood pressure testing and fl u vaccination service. As a result of her visit, four students began attending the pharmacy to access smoking cessation services.
