PRESCRIBER OF THE YEAR GEORGE ROMANES, ROMANES PHARMACY, DUNS

As an independent prescriber, who has worked closely over the years with asthma patients, George Romanes was only too aware of the role that the community pharmacist can play in dealing with patients’ needs on a daily basis. Over the years, the number of stoma care patients attending the pharmacy had increased and this area had become of special interest to George. As an independent prescriber, George now uses his many years of experience in assisting his stoma care patients with their products, creams, lotions and understanding of their condition.

JONATHAN BURTON, RIGHT MEDICINE PHARMACY, UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING

Last year, Jonathan introduced an independent prescribing (IP) clinic to the Stirling pharmacy. Jonathan took part in the CPS/University of Dundee chronic disease care bundle project, performing and recording over 80 interventions for patients receiving medicines for depression, asthma/COPD and type 2 diabetes. Jonathan is also a pre-reg tutor and this year’s trainee introduced structured patient advice/counselling for patients with depressive illness receiving medicines for the fi rst time. This also included follow- up and won an NES prize for the trainee’s evaluation and presentation regarding the IP walk-in clinic service.

SALLY ARNISON AND LEANNE CAREY, BARNTON PHARMACY & TRAVEL CLINIC, EDINBURGH

Sally Arnison and Leanne Carey are both independent prescribers who have been actively prescribing in local GP practices since 2005. They currently work as GP practice pharmacists one day a week, tackling long-term conditions clinics, medicines reconciliation and polypharmacy in the practices in which they work. Sally and Leanne have applied their independent prescribing skills to three areas of day-to-day community pharmacy practice: infl uenza vaccinations, private travel clinic and pharmacy surgery. This enables them to offer patients more rapid access to treatment for a range of common clinical conditions, whilst freeing up same-day appointments in the GP practice for more complex patients.
