Pupils take over town musuem for the day!
Youngsters impress with historical knowledge
Youngsters from a primary school impressed with their historical knowledge as they took charge at their local museum for a day.
Looe Museum was one of three in Cornwall to be part of national Takeover Day – and the Year 6 pupils from Looe Primary Academy did just that, as they took on the roles of museum manager and guides and staffed the reception desk.
Children were also able to show visitors how the museum carries out its conservation work, under the guidance of chairman Petra Stephenson.
‘The children absolutely loved it – it brought the museum alive for them,’ said Petra. ‘That’s what Takeover Day is all
about, getting youngsters involved in their own heritage.’
Prior to the day, Petra had visited the two Year 6 classes and spoken with them about Victorian engineer Joseph Thomas, who built the road to Hannafore and the Banjo Pier as well as extending the railway into the town.
‘I asked the children to look for other examples of things in the museum which were important to Looe, and they were able to find these.
‘Once I’d given them some information, they were able to deliver it in their own way to the visitors, which they did very well.’
