Poole Athletic Club
Jenny Meadows workshop: On 15th October, international medallist Jenny Meadows and coach Trevor Painter held an informative and entertaining workshop in the Ashdown Leisure Centre Sports Hall. Geared to the posture and mechanics used in quality running, the practical session used drills of increasing intensity. The forty attendees, including athletes, parents and coaches, took part with various levels of skill and enthusiasm, some tiring faster than others! An extended Q&A segment surprised both presenters with the quality and diversity of the questions, not being limited to Jenny’s wide personal experience.
Helping local Scouts: A request for assistance from 3rd Bournemouth Scout Group in October 2016 led to them visiting Ashdown for one training/coaching session prior to them competing in the South region Scouts competition in London where they fi nished 5th of the 24 teams. Based on this experience, they asked us again this year. I went to their weekly practice at Winton Rec several times and did some work with the group on Relay and Howler throwing.
Then they came to Ashdown for two sessions covering jumps, throws and sprints, assisted by three PAC
coaches. Interestingly they dedicated their efforts on each occasion by starting and fi nishing with simple Islamic ceremonies. In this way more than thirty athletes were helped.
In the South competition at Lee Valley Centre in London in October they went one better and fi nished as 4th team, again gaining a number of medals. They were understandably happy and grateful.
Winter competitions: So far we have competed with some success in one Dorset Sportshall match at Canford School, plus two more Wessex Cross-Country League matches – at Limelights and Bryanston School in wet and windy conditions.
We are looking forward to the National Youth Development League (UKYDL) AGM in Birmingham with its confi rmation of the fi xtures for 2018. Also to our annual celebratory Junior Awards Presentation on 2nd December, when the athletes judged to be ‘best newcomer’, ‘most improved’, as well as the ‘best’ in various disciplines, will be rewarded for their efforts.
